START WHERE YOU ARE

Beginner lessons.Kids & adults.

Two proposed programs. No swimming experience needed.

Splash Start

Children ages 5–12 · 30 minutes weekly

Water comfort, breathing, floating and basic movement. Groups would be based on readiness, with supervised shallow-water progression.

Four Saturday slots are planned. Each child would attend one assigned 30-minute slot weekly for eight weeks. The teaching plan allows up to six children per instructor; final groups depend on readiness and approved supervision.

Ask about children’s lessons →

Adults Make Waves

Adults ages 18+ · 60 minutes weekly

For people starting from zero or starting again. Learn shallow-water comfort, breathing and balance without pressure to keep up with anyone else.

One adult hour after the children’s lessons. The plan is 12 adults with two instructors and a third instructor helping. Staff commitments and supervision must be confirmed before registration.

Beginner lessons for ages 13–17 are not included in the current plan. Ask about future options →

THE BEGINNER APPROACH

Before the first lap.Start with confidence.

Get comfortable

The proposed approach starts with the instructor, pool routine and supervised shallow-water comfort.

Build the basics

Practice breathing, balance, floating and moving through the water.

Notice progress

Connect skills at your own pace. Progress depends on each swimmer’s readiness.

ROOTED IN DETROIT

Meet Terence Foreman.

Detroit swimmer. Mumford and Renaissance coach. Building an earlier starting point.

Seeing students reach high school while still learning to swim inspired Terence to build an earlier entry point. DMW would connect beginner lessons with a future pathway toward stronger skills and high-school swimming.

Personal credentials reviewed: Red Cross lifeguarding and Michigan EMT documents were checked October 6, 2026.

Credential details

Terence currently coaches at Mumford and Renaissance High Schools. His Red Cross lifeguarding certificate is valid through March 29, 2028; his Michigan EMT license expires April 30, 2028. Documents were checked October 6, 2026. His USA Swimming coaching role is owner-reported.

These are Terence’s personal credentials. Program staffing, insurance and venue safety arrangements are covered in the readiness summary below.

The future pathway: Wave Team

DMW is developing a youth club pathway toward stronger technique, teamwork and competition. Proposed entry: ages 7–18, able to swim 50 yards. Club registration, staffing, schedule and funding remain in development. Wave Team is not open for enrollment.

HELP MAKE THE FIRST SESSION POSSIBLE

Help Detroit familiesget an earlier start.

$4,800

A proposed conditional commitment toward first-session pool rental.

Help establish DMW’s first beginner session: a planning target of 24 children and 12 adults. Rental support would provide the planned pool time; lessons can start only when the complete program is funded and ready.

This first session would be an entry point for the overall DMW program: water confidence now, with a future pathway toward high-school swimming. The first-year planning goal is 100 distinct children across DMW; that goal is not a verified enrollment count. No tuition for children remains a funding-dependent goal.

Interested in lessons?Get launch updates.

Choose your interest and prepare a short message to Terence. You can ask a question, request updates, or both.

This prepares an email; it does not submit your details or register you. You choose whether to send it.

Before you make plans.

What if my child is nervous about water?

Water comfort comes before distance. The proposed approach uses supervised shallow-water progression matched to readiness. Ask Terence about your general concerns now; do not send medical details by email.

What about beginner teens ages 13–17?

They are not included in the current beginner lesson plan. Ask about future options. Wave Team is a separate proposed pathway requiring the ability to swim 50 yards; it is not a beginner substitute.

Can a complete beginner take part?

Yes—the proposed lesson approach starts with water comfort. Final groups, supervision and placement will depend on swimmer readiness and confirmed staffing.

Are the location and launch date confirmed?

No. Mumford is proposed; written district approval is pending. We are targeting 2027 subject to readiness. Dates and clock times will be shared once confirmed.

Will children’s lessons be free?

No tuition for children is a goal, not a confirmed offer. Funding, adult pricing and final terms are pending. Costs will be shared before registration.

How will children be supervised?

The teaching plan uses groups matched to readiness, up to six children per instructor, with a lifeguard on duty. Named staff, approved supervision, group transitions and pickup procedures must be finalized before registration. See the readiness summary for the current status.

Can I reserve a place now?

No. You can request launch updates now. Registration will be a separate step once the program is ready.
